The Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners have agreed to trade IF Jean Segura, OF Mitch Haniger, and LHP Zac Curtis in exchange for RHP Taijuan Walker and IF Ketel Marte. The 2016 National League leader in hits, Jean Segura will now be wearing an American League jersey while the promising Walker joins a depth-heavy rotation in the desert.
How this affects Arizona's RHP future outlook: After swinging and missing on Shelby Miller last year, the D-backs added another potential frontline starter to their rotation. The 24 year-old Walker could quickly emerge as a dominant duo along with Greinke atop of the rotation that the team imagined Miller fulfilling. With former top prospects Braden Shipley and Archie Bradley also in the fold, the D-backs could have five legitimate right-handers in it's rotation going forward. However, there are a lot of question marks surrounding each pitcher besides Greinke.
How this affects Arizona's 2B future outlook: In 2016, Jean Segura was the catalyst that got this Arizona lineup going and it can't be understated how much of an impact he made in his lone season in Phoenix. The Diamondbacks acquired Ketel Marte to take his place, but the 23-year-old wasn't much of a consistent offensive threat last season. If his rookie season (.283/.351/.402) is any indication, Marte has the tools to be an offensive contributor with five more years of team control. However, the team is preparing Brandon Drury to play second base for the club in 2017 after his promising rookie season.
How this affects Arizona's overall future outlook: Not only with the hiring of GM Mike Hazen and Manager Torey Lovullo, but with the trade of Jean Segura for the younger Ketel Marte and impressive righty Taijuan Walker, the Diamondbacks are making it clear they aren't rebuilding, but they're reloading with younger players trying to prolong their window of contention. While Segura likely won't repeat his outstanding 2016 season, he's still just 27 years old and a proven offensive spark. Marte will be a downgrade in every capacity but he has the potential to still be a dynamic player along with Chris Owings in the middle of that infield for years to come if he forces his way into the competitive batting order.
Bottom Line: Losing their leadoff hitter from 2016 is tough, but with A.J. Pollack returning from injury and Brandon Drury's emergence, the D-Backs , the acquisition of Taijuan Walker could turn into a big plus for the franchise as the 24-year-old has enough potential to be a complete game-changer in their rotation.
